Installation of a 3.5“ SATA hard disk

The CD contains the manufacturer’s manual in English. It contains a detailed description of how
to install the hard disk, including pictures.

• Open the enclosure by pulling the plastic plug from the housing.

• Remove the top plastic cover by pushing it backwards and then removing it.

• Insert a 3.5“ SATA hard disk and secure it in place with the 2 screws (flat head, coarse thread). Make sure

you use the correct screws.

• If you use a hard disk with a low profile, insert the enclosed piece of foam in the plastic cover removed

previously. This step is not needed for hard disks with a standard profile.

• Then replace the plastic cover on the drawer.

• Slide the drawer with the hard disk back into the enclosure and secure it on the back using the 2 screws

(round head, fine thread).

Getting Started

a) General

Please note:

For start-up it is necessary to reformat the hard disk. This is, however, is not done with the
Windows OS, but instead with the formatting function integrated in the web interface of the hard
disk enclosure.

If the installed hard disk was formatted with the „NTFS“ file system it can be operated via USB,
however, NAS operation (Network hard disk) is not possible with „NTFS“!

In Windows, formatting with the file system „NTFS“ is only possible with a partition size of approx.
32G Byte. Therefore, you should use the format function in the web interface for the hard disk
enclosure to format the hard disk.

If there is any data on the hard disk, it has to be backed prior to formatting. During
formatting all data will be lost irrevocably!

• Switch your computer on, and wait until the operating system has booted completely.

• Connect the low voltage input of the hard disk enclosure to the corresponding circular plug on the mains

transformer provided.

• Plug the wall plug transformer into a mains socket.

b) USB Connection
• If the hard disk is operated via a RJ45 network cable, please unplug it first.
• Connect the USB connector, on the rear, to a free USB2.0 port on your computer, using the USB cable sup-

plied. Naturally, a conventional USB1.1 port can also be used instead of a USB2.0 port. However, in this
case the transfer data rate will be very low (USB1.1, about 1MByte/sec max.).

• Switch on the hard disk enclosure.

The hard disk enclosure now works like a conventional external USB hard disk drive. If the hard
disk has been formatted with the „XFS“ file system, via the hard disk enclosure’s web interface,
it is not possible to access the data in Windows. For the hard disk to also appear in Windows,
the hard disk has to formatted with the „FAT32“ file system, via the web interface.

c) Operation via a Network Connection

• If the hard disk enclosure is operated via a USB cable, please unplug it first and turn off the hard disk

enclosure.

• Connect the network port to a free port on your network switch (or routers) using a 1:1 connected network

cable (e.g. the one provided).

• Switch on the hard disk enclosure.

• Provided you have a DHCP server in your network (integrated in every router), the hard disk enclosure is now

assigned a free IP address from the address range of your network.

Since the IP address can be different after each start-up, it can be displayed using the program „NetTool“ on the
CD (start the program, select the correct drive from the „Device List“, just below the „Basic Information“, under
„IP address“, the current IP address for the hard disk enclosure is displayed).

The hard disk enclosure can take up to 1 minute to boot, before the network function is available.

• If the DHCP server of your router is disabled, or if the hard disk enclosure can not detect any DHCP server, the

IP address 92.168.16.1 (subnet 255.255.255.0) is set automatically. In which case, the web interface can only
to be reached if the PC used for configuration is set to 92.168.16.2, for example. Alternatively, the IP address
can also be changed using the „NetTool“ program on the CD.

Software Installation and Basic Configuration

On the CD supplied there is a program to make the basic settings of the network functions (e.g. DHCP or
setting a fixed IP address). At the time of writing this operating manual, the „NetTool“ program was supplied
on the CD. On newer versions of the CD, the name and the procedure for the basic settings may have been
changed. Start the program.

Any security warnings about a firewall or a correspondingly configured virus scanner are to be
confirmed. The program needs to be unblocked in order to access the hard disk enclosure. If
access is blocked by the firewall, network operation is impossible!

• First select „Setup Wizard“ and then enter „admin“ as „name“. Default password is „root“.

• In the first configuration window, set the NAS name, the time zone and the date and time.

• In the next window, the default „DHCP“ can be changed to a fixed IP address, depending on how your

network is configured (usually the default setting „DHCP“ is correct, if there is a router present in the
network).

• After completing the basic settings, click on „Access via Web“. The web interface for the hard disk enclosure

now starts. If you are prompted to enter a user name and a password, you must enter the user name „admin“
and the default password „root“ again.

Please refer to the next section.

Web Interface

The hard disk enclosure has its own integrated web server, which can be accessed via a web browser. All the
settings for the network functions can be made from here, such as formatting the hard disk, administering the
FTP etc.

A user name (default „admin“) and a password (default „root“) are necessary to access the Web server.

Most of the settings must be confirmed and saved with „Apply“. After you have made all the settings, always
restart the hard disk enclosure. Use the function „Restart“ in the menu „Tools“.

Formatting the hard disk

The hard disk must be formatted when used for the first time, before it can be used and other settings can be
made (e.g. creating a new user). If there is data stored on the hard disk, please back it up first (on another
hard disk) since all data is lost during formatting!

When formatting, the file systems „FAT32“ and „XFS“ can be selected. Only by using the „FAT32“ system can
the data on the hard disk be accessed later via USB. The „XFS“ file system is not available in Windows,
however it is supported in Linux! With „FAT32“, the limit for the file size is about 4 GByte.

Please, to format refer to the section „Tools“ menu, and there the „Hard Disk Utility“ function.

Menu „Administration“

• Function „LAN“

In „Protocol“, set whether a fixed address („Static IP“)  is to be used or an IP address (DHCP) automatically
assigned by the DHCP server. When using a „Static IP“, please note that every IP address in the network
must only be used once. Furthermore, the „Subnet Mask“ for all the devices has to be the same (default
255.255.255.0). In the section „Work Group“, enter the workgroup name of your network.

If the DHCP is activated, but the hard disk enclosure cannot detect a DHCP server, the IP address
192.168.16.1 (Subnet 255.255.255.0) is used automatically.

• Function „System“

You can change the name of the network hard disk enclosure here („Device Name“). You can also set the
time and date and switch the NTP server on or off for the automatic retrieval of the time/date.

• Function „FTP Server“

Here you can set the functions for the integrated FTP server. For the „Client PC’s Language“, the setting
„Union Code (UTF-8)“ should be selected, unless already preset.
