ESD Protective Measures
A discharge of static electricity from a finger or other conductor might damage printed
circuit boards or other static sensitive devices, reducing the life expectancy of the device.
To prevent ESD damage, observe the following precautions:
■
Avoid hand contact by transporting and storing devices in a static-safe container.
■
Keep electrostatic-sensitive devices in their containers until they arrive at a static-free
work station and ready for installation.
■
Place devices on a grounded surface before removing them from their container.
■
Avoid touching the backplane, connectors, pins, leads, and exposed circuitry.
■
Follow proper grounding methods for handling static-sensitive devices.
Recommended grounding methods include using one or more of the following:
■
Wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded workstation or computer chassis.
■
Use heel straps, toe straps, or bootstraps at standing workstation. Wear the straps on
both feet when standing on conductive floors or dissipating floor mats.
■
Use conductive field service tools.
■
Use a portable field service kit with a folding static-dissipating work mat.
CAUTION:
If recommended grounding equipment is not available, have an Authorized
Compaq Service Provider install the part.
