Selecting Response Message (Vn)
The V commands tell the modem to show response messages as
words or numbers. See Table 5-7 for the list of response messages in
both numbers and words.
Enter:
V0
Enables number response message.
V1
Enables word response message.
5.14 Enabling/Disabling the Speaker (Mn)
This command lets you enable or disable the speaker.

Speaker always off
M1
Speaker on until carrier present ( default )

Speaker always on

Speaker off during dialing ; speaker on until carrier
