Adjusting for Optimum Picture Quality
The display must be adjusted to the source’s levels for black and white, because each source is
different. This adjustment is done one way for computer sources and another for video sources. The
display is also adjusted to the frequency and phase for computer sources.
All signal sources are different. Separate outputs
from one computer video card are different.
Different outputs from a single video
distribution amplifier (DA) are different.
Sometimes these differ by a lot, but usually they
are different by only a few millivolts. Still, these
differences are important. The
Input Level
adjustments compensate for these small
differences. Sections 3.4.1 and 3.4.2 describe
adjustments for computer sources, and section
3.4.3 describes adjustments for video sources.
The adjustments described in the next three
sections match the display to a particular
computer or video output. You should make
these adjustments whenever:
1. you set up a new installation;
2. you change the computer connected to the
display;
3. you change the video card in the computer
connected to the display;
4. you change the display connection from
one video card to another;
5. you change video sources;
6. you change the display connection from
one video DA to another video DA, even if
these connection are on the same DA
output card.

Note: DO NOT use the Input Level adjustments to
make color adjustments. Color
adjustments—getting the units to match in
color and brightness—is accomplished with
Color Balance controls, described in section
3.7.1 on page 3-34.
For computer sources, you will make these
adjustments:
1. Input Black Level (Section 3.4.1)
2. Input White Level (Section 3.4.1)
3. Frequency (Section 3.4.2)
4. Phase (Section 3.4.2)
For video sources, you will make these
adjustments (all in Section 3.4.3):
1. Brightness
2. Contrast
3. Hue
4. Saturation
For all types of sources, you will adjust Color
Balance, as described in Section 3.7.1, if there is
more than one display unit in a video wall. This
adjustment needs to be redone only if the
display itself is changed. Changing sources or
switching between one source and another does
not affect the color balance.
After making these adjustments, save them
in memory so they will always be there, and you
won’t have to do them again every time the
display turns on. (Section 3.5)
