DC ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
SECTION 2
Accessory Batteries
The accessory equipment controlled by the three DC circuit breaker panels
(Safety Breaker Panel, DC Control Center and Bridge Breaker Panel) is powered
by two batteries. Th
e
location of these batteries for the IPS system are on the
boat’s centerline, forward of the starboard engine battery. For the Inboard
system the batteries is located aft of the starboard engine battery.
Electricity from the battery to the Safety Breaker Panel is controlled by a master
disconnect switch. This switch is located in a cabinet in the port aft corner of
the salon. To provide electricity to the Safety Breaker Panel, turn the master
disconnect switch to the “ON” position. Circuit breakers on the Safety Breaker
Panel control the flow of electricity to the other DC circuit breaker panels.
Refer to Section 9 - Hatches and Engine Room for the exact location of the
Accessory Batteries.
Generator Battery
The generator has its own dedicated battery. The location of this battery for the
IPS system is, the last battery from the forward bulkhead, port of the generator.
For the Inboard system the battery is located forward of the generator.
Electricity from the battery to the generator starter is controlled by a master
disconnect switch. This switch for the IPS system is located in the engine room
directly on the port side of the generator. For the Inboard system the switch
is located starboard of the generator on the hull. To provide electricity to the
generator starter, turn the master disconnect switch to the “ON” position.
Refer to Section 9 - Hatches and Engine Room for the exact location of the
generator battery.
Bow Thruster Battery Bank
The optional thruster is powered by the port engine battery. However, an
additional 12 volt capacity battery is required for the thruster to run efficiently.
The additional battery is located in the engine room, forward of the port engine
battery in the IPS system. In the Inboard system this battery is the first battery
next to the forward bulkhead, on the boat’s centerline
.
Electricity from the battery to the thruster is controlled by a master disconnect
switch. This switch is located, in the IPS system, on the port electric panel near
the battery. It is located on the starboard electric panel on the Inboard system.
To provide electricity to the thruster, turn the bow thruster master disconnect
switch to the “ON” position.
Monitoring Battery Voltage Levels
A fully charged battery that has not been charged or discharged for at least
two hours should indicate between 12.3 and 12.6 volts; a fully charged
24-volt battery pair that has not been charged or discharged for at least two
hours should indicate between 26 and 28 volts. A reading below this level
indicates a partially discharged battery.
Engine Batteries
You can determine the voltage level of each engine battery by activating the
battery’s dedicated voltmeter. The voltmeters are located with the other engine
gauges at the helm. To activate each engine’s voltmeter, turn the engine’s ignition
key one position to the right.
