voltmeter is now connected to the regulator 

“DFM” terminal.  This voltage reading is a 

function of field voltage and will change with 

the amperage output of the alternator as the 

load on the alternator changes.  The voltmeter 

reading will be the highest at low amperage 

output and decrease as the output amperage 

(load) increases.

11. Select the center “DEFAULT” setting on 

the “SYSTEM SELECTOR SWITCH.”  The 

alternator should continue to operate but at a 

lower voltage of 13.6 to 14.0.

12. This completes the testing process. This 

process verifies that the regulator can receive 

and process a signal and therefore is fully 

functional.

Test procedure 

(Alternator type date not known)

1.  Testing an alternator where the operating 

system (BSS or LIN) is not known is best 

answered by this question. What happens if 

you select the wrong system type? BSS or 

LIN? Nothing. The LIN regulator sees the BSS 

signal as random noise and does not respond.  

In the same way, a BSS regulator sees the LIN 

signal as noise.  No harm will be done to either 

the HC-CARGO 211126 or the alternator.

2.  Select the “078” adapter plug.

3.  Operate the alternator following the previous 

instructions. Choose either BSS or LIN on 

the “SYSTEM SELECTOR SWITCH.” Select 

the 15.3 voltage setting on the “VOLTAGE 

SELECTOR SWITCH.”

4.  Start the test bench.  Observe the output 

voltmeter and ammeter.  If the alternator 

begins operating at a lower voltage of 13.6 

to 14.0, it is operating in the default mode of 

the other system. If this is the case select the 

other operating system (BSS or LIN). Repeat 

the test, if the alternator begins operating and 

regulates at approximately at 15.3 it is the 

operating system you then selected

5.  Connect the (+) lead of the separate voltmeter 

to the YELLOW (EXT. VOLT) jack on the 

HC-CARGO 211126. Connect the (-) lead of the 

voltmeter to the alternator (-) casting. Observe 

the voltmeter. If you have a reading that 

changes with amperage output load you have a 

“COM-DFM” plug code “078” version.

6.  Select the center “DEFAULT” setting on 

the “SYSTEM SELECTOR SWITCH.”  The 

alternator should continue to operate but at a 

lower voltage of 13.6 to 14.0. 

7.  This completes the testing process. This 

process verifies that the regulator can receive 

and process a signal. Therefore it is fully 

functional. 

General notes

The life of a test lead depends on the frequency 

and severity of its use.

•  Use care when inserting the respective connec

-

tor plugs, either on the tester or the alternator 

to be tested. 

•  Always remove the plugs by pulling on the 

housings not the wires. 

•  Inspect the condition of the various terminals 

periodically and have the lead repaired if 

needed. 

If a test lead is suspected of not working correctly 

try the lead using a known good OEM alternator.

The test lead requires BOTH a connection to 

system POSITIVE (+) (RED wire) and to system 

NEGATIVE (-) (BLACK wire.) Verify that you have 

both.

Interior replacement parts are not available for 

field repair of the test lead. If repair is needed, 

return the lead to HC-CARGO for repair or 

replacement.
