Risk of damage!
Damage to the belt due to incorrect or improper handling. A pre-dam-
aged belt can tear suddenly and abruptly when driving under load.
» You absolutely must avoid the described misuse (fig. 54).
» Be sure to use a gauge to check the belt tension. If you do not have
a gauge or are unsure how to use it, contact your specialist dealer.
» If the belt has slipped ("ratcheting"), it must be replaced as a
preventive measure to prevent the belt from tearing during cycling.
The Gates Carbon Drive™ is correctly installed and optimally tensioned
at delivery.
The system is almost maintenance-free; belts and sprockets do not require
any lubricant.
• Take extreme care in handling to avoid damaging the carbon fibres of
the belt.
Carbon fibres can absorb high tensile forces, while being sensitive to
bending loads, shear forces, notches and impacts. Even though the carbon
fibres of the belt have a sheath, the same care is required when handling
the Carbon Drive as with other carbon products.

52.1 Checking the belt tension
Checking the belt tension by hand is not reliable and should only be
performed provisionally.
Be sure to use a gauge to check the belt tension. If you do not have a
gauge or are unsure how to use it, contact your specialist dealer.
A correctly adjusted belt tension is important for the error-
free and low-wear operation of the Gates Carbon Drive™
system.
If the belt tension is too low and the load too high, this can
lead to so-called ratcheting. The teeth of the belt slip over
the teeth of the rear belt wheel. Under certain circumstances,
ratcheting can damage the carbon fibre cores, thereby
rendering the belt unusable.
52.1.1 Checking belt tension with a gauge
Be sure to use a gauge to check the belt tension. If you do not have a
gauge or are unsure how to use it, contact your specialist dealer.
1. Place the gauge over the belt, on the front and rear belt wheel (fig. 55).
2. Press the gauge on both belt wheels and read the displayed belt tension.
Gauge display (fig. 56)
Green – belt tension in the correct range.
Yellow – belt tension too high; adjust the belt tension.
Red – belt tension too low; adjust the belt tension.

52.1.2 Checking the belt tension by hand
• Press on the belt with a test force of 10 N (approx. 1 kg) from above in
the middle between the belt wheels. The deflection should be 10 mm
(+/- 1 mm) (fig. 57).
