Typical applications for these units are shown—not to scale, obviously—in
Figures 2-2 and 2-3. In Figure 2-2, short-haul modems are being used to connect
an async host computer to a faraway terminal. (The thing to remember about such
applications is that if the computer and terminal are too widely separated, the host
will time out before receiving it receives the terminal’s responses.) In Figure 2-3,
short-haul modems are being used to enable a PC or server to send print jobs to
a distant serial printer.
