Sanding lead-based paint or MDF

Sanding of lead-based paint is not recommended due to the
difficulty of controlling the contaminated dust. The greatest
danger of lead poisoning is to children and pregnant women.
Any pre-1960 building may in the past have been painted with
paint containing lead. This paint may be covered with additional
layers of paint. Before starting work, it is important to
determine whether the paint to be sanded contains lead.
This can be done using a test kit or by a professional decorator.

Personal protection

Do not let children or pregnant women enter the work area.

Wear a dust mask specifically designed for protection
against lead paint dust and fumes and ensure that persons
within or entering the work area are also protected.

Do not eat, drink or smoke in the work area. Do not store
any food or drink in the work area.

Wash yourself very carefully before eating, drinking or
smoking.

Environment

Remove the paint in such a way that the amount of dust is
minimised.

Seal the work area with plastic sheeting.

Minimise the amount of dust outside the work area.

Cleaning

Thoroughly vacuum and clean all surfaces in the work
area every day.

Regularly change the dustbag and filters of the vacuum
cleaner.

Thoroughly wash any foreign objects exposed to dust
before using them again.
