• To turn on TalkBack and Explore by Touch, tap the TalkBack toggle button and leave it in the On
(“checked”) position.
By default, when you turn on TalkBack, you also turn on Explore by Touch.
• To protect the privacy of your passwords, by default your NOOK does not read aloud passwords. If
you would like to hear passwords read aloud (perhaps through a headset you have attached to your
NOOK), tap the
Speak passwords toggle button and leave it in the On (“checked”) setting.
• To enlarge the text displayed by NOOK screen features, tap the Extra Large Text button and leave it in
the On (“checked”) position.
• To lock of the rotation of the screen so that you do not inadvertently change the orientation of the
screen when handling your NOOK, tap the Lock rotation button and leave it in the On (“checked”) posi-
tion.
• To adjust the speed at which text is read by the TalkBack feature, tap Text-to-speech output . The Text-to-
speech settings screen opens. Tap speech rate . A dialog box opens, offering choices from Very Slow to
Very Fast. Normal is the default. Tap the selection for the speech rate you want. The dialog box closes
and your selection takes effect. You can hear an example of the current speech rate by tapping
Listen to
an example on the Text-to-speech settings screen.
Using Explore by Touch
When using Explore by Touch, tap an area of the screen to hear the name of whatever feature is there. You can also
drag your finger across the screen to hear descriptions of each location your finger passes over.
Double-tap a button or icon to activate it.
Drag with two fingers to move objects on the screen (such as book covers on the Home screen or profile icons on
the Lock screen).
Swipe with two fingers to scroll through a list. You can also swipe with two fingers to move from panel to panel on
the Home screen.
The NOOK Accessibility Reader
Your NOOK includes a beta version of the NOOK Accessibility Reader, a built-in accessibility feature that reads
books, periodicals, and user interface features aloud. You can choose how the Accessibility Reader reads to you. You
can move through content word by word or sentence by sentence. You can also choose to have your NOOK read to
you continuously until you tell it to stop.
Modes of Operation
The Accessibility Reader features three modes of operation: Manual, Auto, or Menu. Once it is running, the Acces-
sibility Reader is always in one of these modes.
The Accessibility Reader begins in Manual mode. In Manual mode, you can use gestures to control the progress of the
Reader. You can move forward and backward by page, by sentence, or by word. (The gestures used in Manual mode
are described below.)
A tap on the screen toggles the Accessibility Reader between Manual mode and Auto mode.
In Auto mode, the Reader reads book or periodical content continuously, highlighting each sentence on the screen
as it goes. When it reaches the end of a page, the Reader will turn the page automatically and continue reading. The
reading continues until you tap once anywhere on the screen. This single tap returns the Reader to Manual mode.
