One electrode (SENSE) is a voltage-sensing electrode. It is placed in the bath near the
cell surface. It is connected to the virtual-ground circuit by an agar bridge or similar,

. Since there is no current flowing through this electrode, there is no
voltage drop across R

, is also placed
in the bath. This electrode carries the ionic current. The feedback action of the
operational amplifier ensures that the potential at the SENSE electrode is equal to the
potential at the positive input,
i.e.
0 mV, irrespective of the voltage drop across R
