Starting and Driving
R
Reverse
Before selecting Reverse the vehicle
must be completely stopped. When
changing from Drive to Reverse or
Reverse to Drive the Neutral button
must be pressed first. Never engage
Reverse gear when moving Forward.
This selection has the greatest tractive
advantage.
N
Neutral
Use this position when starting the
engine. If the engine will start in any
other position, the auto cut-out is not
working. Neutral should also be
selected when experiencing longer
than normal periods of idling. For short
stops at traffic lights etc the selected
button remains depressed and the
vehicle is held by the handbrake.
D
Drive
This is the normal forward gear. When
the accelerator is depressed, the
vehicle will move off in first gear and
change up automatically through 2nd to
top gear as the speed builds up. When
the vehicle slows down, the
transmission will change down into the
correct gear automatically.
2
If the road or traffic conditions make it
desirable to prevent the transmission
changing into higher gear,
2
should be
selected to limit the range to 1st and
2nd. When conditions improve, return
the selector to the
D
position. This
position provides progressively greater
engine braking power.
Gearbox Temperature
CAUTION
If an excessive oil
temperature is indicated, the
vehicle must be slowed down
with the service brake until a
down shift is made into a
lower gear in which the oil
temperature does not exceed
the given limits.
If the temperature still does
not drop, the vehicle must be
stopped, neutral selected and
the engine run at full throttle.
The oil temperature should
begin to drop noticeably
within a few seconds. If it
remains too high, the oil level
may be too low or there may
be a fault in the cooler circuit.
If the bus fails to move off you
may have forgotten to press
“N” when starting the engine
or you have stepped on the
accelerator when selecting a
gear. Try again: take your foot
off the accelerator, then press
down and hold the footbrake,
press button “N” and
afterwards button “D”.
