ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
4.1
General
Your Albemarle is equipped with AC and 12-volt AC Electri-
cal Systems. The AC System can draw current from one of
two sources, either shore power outlets at dockside or the op-
tional generator. The AC system draws current from on board
batteries.
The 12-volt batteries in your boat are usually the lead-acid
type. They will require similar maintenance as those found in
automobiles.
There are electrical schematics included in this manual to aid
in following an individual circuit of the boat.
4.2
12-Volt DC Electrical System
The 12-volt system is a standard marine system. There are
two batteries, one for the starboard engine and 12-volt acces-
sories and one for the port engine located in the compartment
below the cockpit fishbox. The batteries themselves can be
charged by either engine separately, both engines simulta-
neously, or by the battery charger when hooked to shore power
or when operating the generator. All 12-volt power is distrib-
uted to the 12-volt accessories through individual circuit break-
ers located in the 12-volt panel in the cabin. A main breaker
located between the battery and the panel protects the system
from an overload. Some 12-volt accessories are operated di-
rectly by the circuit breaker in the panel while others are oper-
ated by switches fed by the panel breakers.
The system is equipped with a battery parallel feature that will
connect both batteries in parallel for extra battery power while
starting the engines. A momentary switch located in the helm
switch panel activates the battery parallel relay located near
the battery switches in the engine compartment. When the
switch is pressed, the relay is engaged to connect both engine
starting batteries, when the switch is released, the relay is de-
activated and the batteries are isolated.
PROPER FUSE OR BREAKER PROTECTION MUST
BE PROVIDED FOR ALL 12-VOLT EQUIPMENT
ADDED. DO NOT OVERLOAD THE ACCESSORY
CIRCUIT BREAKERS OR OTHER CIRCUITRY
THROUGH ADDITIONAL 12-VOLT EQUIPMENT.
Note: The DC system is prewired for Sea Key.
Twin Engine Battery Switches
There are two battery selector switches located on the star-
board rear side of the engine compartment. One battery switch
feeds the starboard engine and the 12-volt accessory panel.
The other battery switch feeds the port engine and anchor wind-
lass. The selector switches also direct the charging current
when the engines are operating.
The “ON” position should only be used when starting and
operating the engines or while using 12 volt accessories. Both
switches should be in the “OFF” position when leaving the
boat unattended.
Note:
Current is supplied to the automatic float switches
for the forward and aft bilge pumps when the bat-
teries are connected and the battery selector
switches are off.
Note:
The port battery supplies power to a bilge pump,
high water alarm, port engine, and the anchor
windlass. The starboard battery supplies power
to a bilge pump, high water alarm, starboard en-
gine, and house lights.
Single Engine Battery Switch
There is one battery selector switch. The switch feeds the en-
gine and the 12-volt accessory panel. 12-volt power can be
supplied by either battery # 1 or battery # 2 separately or by
both batteries simultaneously. The selector switch also directs
the charging current when the engines are operating.
For example: When the switch is on battery # 1, the engine
and the 12-volt system will be supplied power by battery # 1.
Battery # 2 will be isolated and in reserve. The alternator will
