1. DESCRIPTION

1.1. The PDS3000C01

The PDS3000C01 is an analog composite video to SDI digital video converter. The module
incorporates a frame memory in order to synchronize the digital video output with an
external digital reference signal.

The analog to digital video conversion employs a 10 bit digitizer with a sampling
frequency of 27MHz obtained from a quartz oscillator in order to obtain a high quality
digital signal. Extraction of the three video components is performed with an adaptive
comb filter in the digital domain.

The PDS3000C01 provides an adjustable, digital equalizer for compensation of the
frequency response of the cabling used for the analog input. Luminance, chrominance
and black levels can also be adjusted by the user.

The module can operate as a video delayer or as a frame synchronizer. In Frame
Synchronization mode the SDI output is synchronized to the digital reference input. In
Video Delayer mode the SDI video signal is synchronized to the analog video signal and
the digital reference input is not used.

In either operating mode the user can adjust the delay of the output signal in order to
obtain delays of up to one frame, with a resolution of 37 ns. Use of the digital reference
signal provides an elevated level of precision and stability for the output signal.

The user can configure the composite video decoder to operate in three different ways:
using an adaptive comb filter, performing a simple separation with a low pass filter for
the luminance and band pass filter for the chrominance and via a simple separation with
a notch filter for the luminance and band pass filter for the chrominance.

Control over the operating mode, configuration of the delays and processing of the
output signal can all be performed from the front panel o from a computer when the
mounting frame in which the PDS3000C01 is installed has a communications control
module as well.

The front panel of the module contains LEDs that indicate errors in the digital reference,
in the input composite video signal and in the synchronization status.

The PDS3000C01 module performs a complete processing of the checksums of the SDI
reference signal and inserts EDH packets into the digital stream for error detection as per
SMPTE RP 165.

The rear board of the module includes a bypass relay that can connect the SDI video
reference input to one of the outputs. This guarantees signal continuity for one of the
