Chapter 4 : Using the EWI4000s as a MIDI controller
As the EWI4000s has Internal sounds and effects, you can play it immediately by itself. You
can also use the EWI4000s as MIDI controller for an external MIDI sound module/synth.
About MIDI
MIDI is a standard for transferring the performance data between electronic instruments
regardless of the manufacturer. Devices are connected using a special cable called a
MIDI cable. For example, when you connect the EWI4000s’ MIDI OUT to MIDI IN of
the MIDI sound module, the performance data you made with your EWI4000s will be
sent to the MIDI sound module, which plays the sound. MIDI can transfer only the
performance data, not the actual sound. To transfer as much data as possible through one
MIDI cable, there are 16 MIDI channels. The MIDI channel is very important when you
handle MIDI. You must set the same MIDI channels for the both the EWI4000s and the
sound module even if you play the sound from the EWI4000s. For example, if the
EWI4000s ‘output channel is set to 1, the sound module’s input channel should also be 1.
The EWI4000s transmits not only Note Number with the Velocity but also some Control
Changes such as Breath Controller, Portamento, Sustain, etc.
