6.3. Visually Inspect the Axial Heater
Check the following during a visual inspection:
1. Ensure all guards are in place and in good working order.
2. Examine the axial heater for damage or unusual wear.
3. Be sure all safety decals are in place and are legible.
4. Check that the air intake area is free of obstructions.
5. Check all components. Replace damaged or worn parts before using the axial heater.
6. Inspect all gas connections. Check for leaks with soapy water.
7. Check tightness of bolts/nuts, fasteners, and hardware (re-torque if necessary).
6.4. Annual Maintenance
• Clean any debris out of the fan, heater housing, and transition.
• Check burner orifices to make certain they are not plugged with foreign material. If necessary, use a
3/16" (5 mm) drill bit to clean out the ports and remove the material, and use a small wire brush or pipe
cleaners to clean the ports in the burner housing.
• Check all plumbing and fittings for leaks, holes, or damage – use a water/mild soap solution, and spray on all
joints. If bubbling occurs, a leak exists and the fitting needs to be tightened or replaced.
• Annually check the gas tightness of all safety valves in the fan/heater system.
• Check all wiring; check for loose connections, bare wires, and damage caused by rodents. Replace any wiring
if required.
• Check the flame probe for cracked insulation.
• Check spark plug – verify gap to be 0.07” (1.78 mm) and clean off any excess carbon buildup. Adjust the
spark plug gap if necessary. Replace the electrode if it is corroded.
• Make sure the thermostat (if equipped) and any other controls are in place and in working order.
• Make certain the high-limit switch has not been tripped due to vibration during shipping or installation. If
needed, reset the switch by pushing the red reset button.
• Verify correct flame with no indication of any plugged orifice holes.
• Check the sediment trap for debris and/or oil by unscrewing the cap on the end of the strainer and
removing any debris that has accumulated. If a large amount of debris and/or oil is discovered, remove the
cap and strainer from the valve train and wash with Varsol or similar cleaning solution. Make certain the
strainer is completely dry and reattached to the valve train before operating the heater. DO NOT USE
COMPRESSED AIR WHILE CONNECTED TO THE HEATER UNIT. Doing so will damage the regulator and the
heater will not function.
6.5. Fuel Train and Supply Gas Leak Check
After the plumbing is connected check all connections and pipes for leaks because pipe
connections can loosen due to vibrations encountered during shipping. It may be necessary to
reseal the pipes.
