Grounding the Buried Fiber
The
buried
fiber
drop
cable
to
the
subscriber
premises
used
in
this
application
can
be
one
of
the
following:
• Non
‐
armored:
the
non
‐
armored
fiber
drop
cable
has
a
metal
strand
for
locating
purposes.
Skip
this
procedure
if
the
fiber
drop
is
non
‐
armored.
• Armored
drop:
when
the
fiber
drop
cable
is
armored,
grounding
of
the
cable
sheath
is
required
at
the
ONT.
A
UL
Listed
ground
shield
connector
is
used
to
ground
the
armored
fiber.
If
the
fiber
drop
is
armored,
complete
the
following
steps
to
ground
the
fiber:
1. Install
the
ground
shield
connector
assembly
on
the
fiber
drop
cable.
2. Place
black
electrical
tape
tightly
around
the
connections
to
prevent
water
intrusion
and
corrosion.
3. Attach
a
ground
strap
to
the
ground
termination
lug.
Ground Wire Connection
WARNING
!
Extreme
care
must
be
taken
when
attaching
the
ground
connectors
to
the
utility
(earth)
ground
rod.
If
the
ground
is
interrupted
or
disturbed
in
any
way,
an
unsafe
condition
will
exist.
Refer
to
the
National
Electrical
Code
(NEC)
and
state/local
codes
for
details
on
grounding
requirements.
Complete
the
ground
connection
by
completing
the
following
steps:
1. Remove
the
rubber
grommet
from
the
housing
(see
Step
1
in
).
2. Insert
a
6
AWG
solid
copper
ground
wire
through
the
rubber
grommet
(see
Step
2
in
Terminate
the
ground
wire
at
the
ground
bar
as
shown
in
Figure 12. Cable Ground Installation
3. Reinsert
the
rubber
grommet
with
the
ground
wire
into
the
ONT
housing
(see
Step
3
in
4. Ensure
the
ground
wire
is
routed
as
shown
