Installation Instructions

Proper location for installing your water heater
Carefully select the location of the water heater. Follow the instructions below:
• This water heater must be installed by A. O. Smith recommended installers only. It is the
responsibility of the person having the water heater installed to ensure that installing
contractor has proper licenses and permits for installing water heaters in your location. It
is highly recommended that installers attend a product knowledge class to ensure
customer satisfaction and warranty coverage.
• This water heater is designed for indoor use only and should not to be installed
outdoors.
• Locate the water heater where an adequate gas line size and plumbing connections are
feasible and convenient.
• A. O. Smith recommended installer or service technician should install the water heater,
inspect it, and leak test it before use.
• The water heater should be located in an area where water leakage of the unit or
connections will not result in damage to the area adjacent to the water heater or to
lower floors of the structure. When such locations cannot be avoided, it is recommended
that a suitable drain pan, adequately drained, be installed under the water heater.
• It is recommended to use CO detector. Only A. O. Smith recommended CO detector
should be used for this gas water heater.
• Should overheating occur or the gas supply fail to shut off, turn off the manual gas valve
to the water heater.
• The water heater should not be installed in enclosed spaces having little or poor
ventilation. Refer the Mounting instructions for minimum clearances a required.
• The water heater should not be installed in the bathroom.
Warning:
Flammable materials, petrol, diesel, kerosene,
pressurized containers, or
any other items or articles that are potential fire hazards must NOT be placed on or
adjacent to the water heater. The water heater area must be kept free of all
combustible materials, petrol, diesel, kerosene and other flammable vapors and
liquids.
Caution:
• Keep children away as the top of the water heater vent cap will get very hot
during operation. Install it in a place that prevents the top of the water heater
being reached by children.
• Flue gases will be released through the vent cap. Flue gas is very hot and
contains carbon monoxide. The water heater cannot be installed indoors. To
prevent risk of fire and poisoning by carbon monoxide, assure all clearances
indicated in user guide.
