4. Technical data
Duration of measurement:
max. 9.2 s
Display resolution:
1/100 s
Foot switch connector:
3.5 mm jack
5. Operation
•
The response box should be connected to the
analog input U
A
in
or U
B
in
of the 3B NET
log
TM
unit
via its miniDIN cable.
•
Turn on the 3B NET
log
TM
unit and wait for it to
detect the box ("Probe Detect").
•
Place the response box in reach of the person
acting as a guinea pig.
Note: When determining hand reaction times, the
response box needs to be lying on the bench along-
side the test person’s hand. When determining foot
reaction times their foot needs to be on the floor
alongside the response box.
The response box starts the random display of LED
colours automatically.
The response to the colour displayed (pressing either
the requisite button or the foot switch) should be as
quick as possible to measure the fastest reaction
times.
6. Applications
The purpose is to measure the reaction times to a
visual occurrence (an LED flashing on in a certain
colour), responding with either the
dominant
or
non-
dominant
hand – for right-handers or left-handers –
and similarly the right or left foot.
The effect of various factors (e.g. tiredness, taking of
medicines or perhaps alcohol - BEWARE, this should
only be done with supervision) on reaction times
may also be studied.
Reaction times are displayed for observation and
interpretation on the 3B NET
log
TM
unit.
Average reaction times can be evaluated using the
3B NET
lab
TM
software.
7. Sample experiment
Recording a test person’s reaction times over a
long period
Required equipment:
1 3B NET
log
TM
U11300
1 3B NET
lab
TM
U11310
1 Response box
U11394
•
Prepare the experiment as shown in Fig. 1.
•
Open the 3B NET
lab
TM
application (template) for
the experiment with the response box.
•
Sit as shown in Fig. 2.
•
Start the template and record the test person’s
reaction times over a long period (Fig. 3).
•
Determine how reaction times depend on the
factors mentioned in Section 6 "Applications".
•
Repeat the experiment with different test per-
sons.
•
Evaluate the results:
Calculating the average from the values in Fig. 3
by means of a spreadsheet gives a result of 0.85 s.
