Subnet Masking
Bot h an I Pv6 addr ess and I Pv6 subnet m ask com pose of 128- bit binar y digit s, w hich ar e divided
int o eight 16- bit blocks and w r it t en in hexadecim al not at ion. Hexadecim al uses four bit s for each
charact er ( 1 ~ 10, A ~ F) . Each block’s 16 bit s ar e t hen r epr esent ed by four hexadecim al
charact er s. For exam ple, FFFF: FFFF: FFFF: FFFF: FC00: 0000: 0000: 0000.
Interface ID
I n I Pv6, an int er face I D is a 64- bit ident ifier. I t ident ifies a physical int er face ( for exam ple, an
Et her net por t ) or a vir t ual int er face ( for exam ple, t he m anagem ent I P address for a VLAN) . One
int er face should have a unique int er face I D.
EUI-64
The EUI - 64 ( Ext ended Unique I dent ifier) defined by t he I EEE ( I nst it ut e of Elect r ical and Elect r onics
Engineer s) is an int er face I D for m at designed t o adapt w it h I Pv6. I t is der ived fr om t he 48- bit ( 6-
byt e) Et hernet MAC address as show n next . EUI - 64 inser t s t he hex digit s fffe bet w een t he t hir d and
four t h byt es of t he MAC addr ess and com plem ent s t he sevent h bit of t he fir st byt e of t he MAC
addr ess. See t he follow ing exam ple.
Stateless Autoconfiguration
Wit h st at eless aut oconfigurat ion in I Pv6, addr esses can be uniquely and aut om at ically generat ed.
Unlike DHCPv6 ( Dynam ic Host Configurat ion Pr ot ocol version six) w hich is used in I Pv6 st at eful
aut oconfigurat ion, t he ow ner and st at us of addresses don’t need t o be m aint ained by a DHCP
ser ver. Ever y I Pv6 dev ice is able t o generat e it s ow n and unique I P addr ess aut om at ically w hen
I Pv6 is init iat ed on it s int er face. I t com bines t he pr efix and t he int er face I D ( generat ed fr om it s ow n
Et her net MAC addr ess, see
) t o for m a com plet e I Pv6 addr ess.
When I Pv6 is enabled on a device, it s int er face aut om at ically generat es a link- local addr ess
( beginning w it h fe80) .
When t he int er face is connect ed t o a net w ork w it h a r out er and t he Sw it ch is set t o aut om at ically
