8x21 Traveller Binoculars
Operating Instructions
Thank you for choosing Viking. This instrument has been manufactured
to the highest quality standards and thoroughly checked by our own staff.
With care, it will give you many years of trouble-free service and by fol-
lowing these instructions, you will get the best out of the instrument.
Focusing
Most binoculars are equipped with a centre focus wheel, which adjusts
both left and right optics. In addition, one of the eyepieces rotates to
compensate for any optical imbalance between your eyes. The +/- scale
on this eyepiece is called the Dioptre correction.
All binoculars have a central hinge so that the optics can be adjusted to
suit the exact distance between your eyes. To achieve the best
performance, firstly open or close the binocular so that you can see one
image. Then, focus on an object through the left eyepiece only, using the
centre focus wheel. When the left image is in sharp focus, look through
the right eyepiece only and rotate it until the image is sharp. Making a
note of the eyepiece setting will avoid having to go through the focusing
procedure each time you use the binocular. If you wear spectacles when
using your binocular, the dioptre correction should be set at zero as your
prescription lenses have already corrected any optical imbalance.
Using Spectacles
Most Viking binoculars are fitted with fold or twist down eyecups. For nor-
mal use, they should be used in the ‘up’ position, but if you are using
spectacles, you can obtain a full field of view by turning them down.
Care of Binoculars
Your binocular will give many years of satisfactory service if treated with
care. Try to protect it from dusty conditions and extremes of temperature
and moisture.
Lens cleaning: Remove any particles of sand or dust on the outer lens
using a camera lens blower brush. The lenses may then be cleaned by
gently wiping with a moistened soft lens cloth or tissue.
Do not drop or knock the instrument or attempt to dismantle it as the opti-
cal alignment will be affected causing a double image in the
binoculars. This is not covered by the warranty and can only be rectified
by suitable qualified technicians using special equipment.
