Shift Handle Installation and
Adjustment
The manual model no longer uses the con-
trol rod. The shift handle on the tiller arm
has a cable mounted to it to operate the shift
gate.
a. Place the drill template on the tiller
arm, holding in place with masking
tape at each end. Center punch the
two hole locations and drill through
using a 3/16” drill. Remove the tem-
plate.
b. Remove the plastic cover from the
shift handle. Center punch for a 3/16”
hole on the centerline of the handle.
Drill from the inside as close under
the upper threaded boss as possible
allowing sufficient clearance for a nut
to be installed on a screw passing
through the hole.
c. Next, attach the cable to the shift gate
with the terminal end threaded as far
onto the cable as it will tighten.
Loosen the two cable support bracket
bolts on the pump main housing and
torque the mounting bolts to 8 ft-lbs.
(with the cable support bracket posi-
tioned as far forward as possible).
d. Attach the upper cable clamp to the
tiller arm using the two #10-24 x 5/8
bolts and fiberlock nuts.
e. Shift to forward. The roller should be
at the end of the cam slot, with the
reverse gate linkage in forward.
Adjust the ball rod end to reach this
position. Install the #10-32 hex head
cap screw through the ball rod end
and the shift handle capturing the
toothed lock washer and nut on the
handle inside recess. Shift to reverse
and back to forward and verify that
the gate cannot be forcibly rotated
toward reverse by pulling on the gate
by hand. Readjust the rod end (if nec-
essary) to satisfy this condition. Lock
the jam nut and reinstall the plastic
covers on the handle and tiller.
Always return the throttle to idle before shift-
ing.
