Suggestions to Optimize AutoRead Performance and Benefits
The AutoRead reports use True Type™ fonts by default. Many dot matrix, or "line" printers,
have difficulty reproducing these fonts, or print them much more slowly than they would
print a draft font type. As a result, users may find that a Laser or Ink Jet printer works best
when printing the AutoRead meter reading reports. The printer used for AutoRead reports
has no effect on the printer used for printing bills.
It is possible to set up AutoRead to print to any printer that is installed on the PC, as long
as it is set up as an available printer within the Windows operating system. If a dot matrix or
"line" printer is chosen to print AutoRead reports, users may find that setting the Windows
printer properties for the dot matrix printer to "Draft" mode will speed the printing of the
AutoRead reports.
Suggested System Precautions
All computer equipment and peripherals, including HHD charging stands, should be
connected to an uninterruptible power source (UPS). This will greatly reduce the chances
of lost data due to general power outages. In addition, most UPS units are equipped with
power-surge protectors that can prevent damage to the system components from sudden
power surges. Make sure that the UPS selected has ample capacity to power the system
for which it is employed.
If the utility uses Sensus Metering Systems PhonRead Meter Reading System, Call-In
Protocol, or if it is connected to an external billing system via phone modem, a surge
protector for the phone line should also be considered. While the voltage carried by the
typical phone line is very low, in the case of a lightning strike in the general vicinity, current
transmitted along the phone line can be substantial and can cause damage to sensitive
system components.
Information about the UPS, and both types of surge protectors, can be obtained from most
computer retailers.
User Prerequisites
This manual presumes a basic, working knowledge of Windows operating system
operations. Users should have previous experience operating a PC running a Windows
(see
) Operating System. For individuals not familiar with these operating systems,
formal instruction is strongly recommended.
