4. Bearing Shell
1) Do an inspection of the bearing shell (1,
Fig. 4 ).
2) If it is necessary to remove the bearing
shell, do step a ) to step b ).
a) Remove the two screws (2).
b) Remove the bearing shell (1).
3) Make sure that there is no damage to the
bearing shell.
4) Put oil on the surface of the bearing shell
as follows:
a) If you start the engine immediately
after completion of this procedure,
use only bearing oil.
b) If the engine has stopped for some
days, use a mixture of
high-viscosity oil (steam engine
cylinder oil, ISO VG 1000/1500) and
bearing oil. The ratio is two thirds
ISO VG 1000/1500 to one third
bearing oil.
Note: A list of suppliers for ISO VG
1000/1500 high viscosity oils is
given in Table 1 .
5) Apply a thin layer of clean oil to the
surfaces of the bearing shell.
6) Attach the bearing shell (1) to the
connecting rod with the two screws (2).
Make sure that each end of the the
bearing shell is the same distance above
the connecting rod.
5. Crosshead − Lower (Piston Removed)
1) Make sure that the crosshead pin (7, Fig. 3 is in good condition.
2) During installation, make sure that dirt does not go on the running surface of the
bearing shell and the seating surface of the connecting rod.
3) Operate the chain block (CB) to lift the crosshead a small distance.
4) Remove the two supports (94322).
5) Operate the chain block (CB) to lower the crosshead on to the connecting block.
Make sure that the elastic studs are correctly aligned.
6) Use a round bar to tighten equally the round nuts (5).
7) Measure the distance (X1 and X2,
Fig. 5 ) between the ends of the bearing shell and
the connecting rod (4).
