Changing the Transmission Drive Belt

WARNING:

Be sure to shut the engine off,

remove ignition key, disconnect the spark
plug wire(s) and ground against the engine
prior to removing the belt(s)

IMPORTANT:

The V-belts found on your tractor are

specially designed to engage and disengage safely. A
substitute (non-OEM) V-belt can be dangerous by not
disengaging completely. For a proper working machine,
use factory approved belts.

To change or replace the drive belt on your tractor,
proceed as follows:

•

Remove the weight from the rear of the tractor by
unfastening the hairpin clip from the clevis pin
which secures the weight bracket to the tractor’s
tow bar. Carefully lift the weight up and off of the
rear of the tractor and set it aside.

•

Remove the eight self-tapping screws which fasten
the tractor’s rear access plate to the frame. See
Figure 22. Save these screws as they will be used
to refasten the plate in later steps.

•

Carefully remove the access plate and set it aside.

IMPORTANT:

Before proceeding, note the routing of the

worn or damaged drive belt. Be certain to install and
route the replacement drive belt in the exact same
orientation.

•

Looking at the tractor from the right side, locate and
carefully remove the extension spring which
maintains tension on the drive belt’s double-idler
pulley. See Figure 23.

•

Remove the belt from the double-idler pulley.

•

Grasp the PTO idler pulley bracket and pivot it
toward the discharge chute to relieve tension on the
PTO belt. Refer to Figure 20 and Figure 21.

•

Remove the PTO belt from around the electric PTO
clutch. Refer to Figure 20 and Figure 21.

•

Remove the hex bolt from the center of the electric
PTO clutch and gently lower it off of the engine
crankshaft. Refer to Figure 20 Figure 21.

•

The engine pulley is located directly above the
electric PTO clutch. Lower the engine pulley and
remove the drive belt from around it.

IMPORTANT:

When remounting the engine pulley and

electric PTO clutch, torque the center hex bolt to
between 38 foot-pounds and 50 foot-pounds.

•

In the rear of the tractor, reach into the area where
the access plate previously was and carefully
remove the drive belt from around both
transmission pulleys. Be careful not to damage the
cooling fan found on top of each transmission. See
Figure 24.

•

Install the replacement belt by following the above
steps in reverse order.
