• Check the flapper valve and inlet port for leaks or damage.
If the flapper valve is worn or distorted, it may not seal tightly. Inspect
the threads on the inlet port nipple for deep scratches which could
allow air leaks.
• Check the clearance between the impeller and the volute insert.
Additional shims are required to maintain the clearance as the impeller
wears.
• Check the pump housing O-ring and rear pump flange.
Replace the O-ring if it is torn or crushed. Make sure the cover is
tightened evenly. Check that the rear plate is not warped.
• Check for water leaks between the pump housing and the
engine. Inspect the mechanical seal lubricant and engine oil.
The presence of water indicates a loose impeller bolt or damage to the
mechanical seal.
• Check for oil leaks between the pump housing and the engine.
An oil leak indicates a failed shaft seal.
• Check the pump suction with a vacuum gauge.
If the gauge reading is above 16 in. Hg (55 KPa), the problem is
probably outside the pump, in the hose line or fittings.
