Signal Words:
This manual classifies personal injury risks and situations that might cause property damage with
“Signal words”. Signal words indicate the seriousness of injuries that might result if a particular act or
omission occurs.
Identifies a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, WILL result in DEATH or
SERIOUS INJURY. Use of this signal word is limited to the most extreme situations.
Identifies a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, COULD result in DEATH or
SERIOUS INJURY.
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, COULD result in MINOR or
MODERATE injury.
Identifies practices likely to result in product/property damage, such as operation that
might damage the boom.
Hazards:
Vestil strives to identify all foreseeable hazards associated with the use of its products. However, material handling
is dangerous and no manual can address every possible risk. The most effective means for avoiding injury is for the
end user to apply sound judgment whenever using this device.
If this product is used improperly or carelessly, serious personal injuries or death might result.

DO NOT exceed the capacity. Capacity appears on tag 993. See

The lifting equipment (crane, hoist, trolley) must have AT LEAST the same capacity as this lifter. The capacity of this
lifter is 1,000 pounds (454.5kg). DO NOT attempt to lift a load that weighs more than the capacity of the lifting
component (crane, trolley, hoist, or lifter) with the smallest capacity. For example, if the crane, hoist, and lifter all have
capacities of 1,000 pounds, but the trolley has a capacity of 1,500 pounds, the net weight applied to the trolley must not
exceed 1,000 pounds.
•
ALWAYS inspect the lifter before each use according to the inspection procedures described in the most recent
revision of ASME standard B30.20.
•
Review the safety messages included in the manuals for your crane, trolley, hoist, and any other device used in
conjunction with this product.
•
DO NOT open the lifter while using it to lift a drum. Be certain that the drum is fully supported by the ground or other
surface, and is fully immobilized, i.e. can’t fall over, roll, slide, or move in an uncontrolled manner, before disconnecting
the lifter from the drum.
•
ALWAYS attach the lifter to a properly functioning safety hook or to a coupler that prevents accidental or unintended
detachment.
•
Before attaching the lifter to a drum, inspect the drum. Verify that all parts, especially the rim/lip and rolling rings, are
sound. DO NOT attempt to lift the drum with the lifter if the drum is not sound.
•
Both drum cradles must firmly engage the side and upper rolling ring of the drum. DO NOT use the lifter if it does not
close tightly against the drum.
•
Always test the connection between the lifter and the drum by lifting the drum a few inches above the ground. Keep
the drum elevated for 30 seconds. Only use the lifter to move the drum if the connection is adequate and the drum
does not distort while suspended.
•
DO NOT use the VDL to lift drums over people.
•
DO NOT stand or walk, or allow any other person to stand or walk, beneath an elevated drum. DO NOT raise the load
over your feet or any other part of your body. Avoid contact with the side of the drum while it is elevated.
•
Every person not involved with lifting the drum should remain outside the lifting area for the duration of the lift.
•
Prevent load swing! Center the trolley, hoist and lifter above the drum before attaching it to the lifter. Slowly and
carefully raise the drum.
•
DO NOT elevate the drum more than a few inches from the ground. Only lift drums a few inches above the ground to
avoid contact with objects in the travel path.
•
DO NOT remove or obscure any label. Verify the placement and legibility of all labels and tags shown in the
on p. 5. DO NOT use this device UNLESS all labels and tags are readable, undamaged, and securely
fastened to the device.
•
DO NOT sit on or apply any weight/pressure to a suspended drum.
