2.1.4 Generic table of torques recommended for screws
Instructions for using the tables
• Only use these tables when no torque has been specified.
• When to use tables 1A and 2A for LOW torque:
• When components joined by the screw may suffer damage
• When there are thick and/or compressible gaskets between the components
• When mating surfaces are not flat or not parallel
• Non-flat, non-milled surfaces on the screw head (or nut)
• When to use tables 1B and 2B for NORMAL torque:
• When there is no possibility of damage to components
• When tightening is required to ensure greater reliability of the screw or nut fastening
• When the thread is not lubricated prior to assembly
• The track of nuts and screws, in millimetres (ISO) or in inches, is the diameter "D", as shown in the
figure below, and not the width "S" of the head

The figure below shows that correct tightening is crucial, as it determines the tension to which screws (or
studs) are subjected and, therefore, the compression of the components together.
