4. Front Panel Menus
4.1 Main Menu
DV2000 users typically deal with “jobs”, so the DV2000 menuing system is designed to
handle jobs. A job may be a closed caption encoding session, or it may be a subtitle master-
ing session. Jobs are more natural for post production users than broadcast users. In post
production, the DV2000 is used exclusively on a job by job basis. For example, in one day, a
tape duplicator may encode closed captions for two movies, and create subtitles for a third.
Each of these activities is considered a separate job. Broadcasters, on the other hand, may
use the DV2000 for real-time closed caption encoding only. In that case, they may only have
one “job” configured, and it may be named “Live Closed Captioning”.
The main menu is also referred to as the “jobs list” menu.
DV2000 has two “built-in” jobs: Load Job From Floppy and Load Job From Server. Other
jobs that appear on the jobs menu are loaded by the user. When Load Job From Floppy is
selected, files from a floppy disk (or 120 MByte SuperDisk) are copied into a unique
subdirectory under the “jobs” directory on the DV2000 hard drive. Only script, caption,
subtitle, and graphics files are copied; all other files are ignored.
If the job consists of a single caption file when loaded, the menu changes to that specific
caption job and the job is run automatically. This means an operator has only to insert a
floppy disk into the drive and select Load Job From Floppy to run an encoding job.
The DV2000 allows you to change certain parameters associated with closed captioning,
such as waveform amplitude and time code offset. When a caption job is run as described
above, the front panel settings are in effect. A user may create a script file that changes some
of the settings, then executes the caption job. In that case, the script file settings are used.
