THE FIRST

TELESCOPE IS SAID TO

HAVE BEEN INVENTED BY

A DUTCH MAN CALLED HANS

LIPPERSHEY IN C.1608

. HE

WAS A MAKER OF SPECTACLES.

IT WAS GALILEO HOWEVER,

SOON AFTER, WHO MADE

IMPROVEMENTS TO THIS

EARLY CREATION, MAKING

HIS MORE POWERFUL

AND POINTING IT

INTO THE SKY!

YOU HAVE A

REFRACTOR

’

TELESCOPE, WHICH

MEANS IT HAS A LONG TUBE

WITH A LENS IN FRONT AND

AN EYEPIECE AT THE BACK.

THE FRONT (OBJECTIVE) LENS

FOCUSES LIGHT TO FORM AN

IMAGE IN THE BACK. THE

EYEPIECE IS A LITTLE

MAGNIFYING GLASS WITH

WHICH YOU LOOK AT

THE IMAGE.
