12. Preventive Maintenance and Inspection
Preventive Maintenance and Inspection includes the pre-flight visual inspection and operational checks.
A. Pre- Flight/Daily Inspection
(1) Ensure the dovetail to searchlight assembly mount is secure, fasteners are correctly installed and
there is no excessive play on the dovetail assembly.
(2) Inspect the searchlight for damage or cracks.
(3) Inspect front protection window for damage due to sand and dust.
(4) Clean front window with alcohol or smear free glass cleaner and lint free soft cloth if necessary.
(5) Inspect electrical cables for signs of wear, broken insulation and ensure all connectors are
securely fastened.
(6) Inspect for foreign objects: particularly the cooling fan and front case air vents.
B. Operational/Pre-flight Test
(1) This verifies correct searchlight operation – the use of auxiliary power to carry out these checks is
recommended.
WARNING: ENSURE ALL PERSONNEL ARE CLEAR OF THE FRONT OF THE
SEARCHLIGHT.
WARNING: ENSURE ALL PERSONNEL ARE WEARING TINTED SAFETY GLASSES THAT
COMPLY WITH AUSTRALIAN STANDARDS AS/NZS 1337 AND 1338 OR
SIMILAR OVERSEAS STANDARDS FOR OCULAR AND IMPACT
PROTECTION.
WARNING: ENSURE THE IMMEDIATE AREA AROUND THE GIMBAL MOVEMENT
ENVELOPE (Figure 9) IS CLEAR OF ANY OBSTRUCTIONS.
(a) Grip Hand Controller

if installed, use the grip hand controller to check:
NOTE: This procedure describes only the basic configuration of the Trakka
searchlight. For installation on the helicopter, refer to the OEM Aircraft
Maintenance Manual.
i.
Turn power ON (energise the searchlight system)
ii. DEPLOY function. Ensure the DEPLOY position is in the correct location.
iii. Joystick function.
iv. ARM ON and Lamp start.
v. Ensure Searchlight fan is operating.
vi. Focus function.
vii. Filter change function.
viii. Lamp OFF and ARM OFF
ix. Laser pointer (if installed) operation with the aid of night vision goggles or similar.
x. Slave functions (if fitted).
xi. STOW function. Ensure the STOW position is in the correct location.
xii. Grip Hand Controller indicators (LED) and display (Seven Segment) test.
CAUTION:
DO NOT TURN OFF THE SYSTEM POWER SWITCH IMMEDIATELY
AFTER TURNING OFF THE LAMP.
THE COOLING FAN NEEDS TO OPERATE FOR APPROXIMATELY TWO
MINUTES AND WILL THEN AUTOMATICALLY SHUT ITSELF DOWN.
THE SYSTEM MAY THEN BE TURNED OFF.
xiii. Turn power off (remove auxiliary power if used)
