Belt Maintenance

Inspecting the Belts

Inspect all belts daily.

Check belts for cracks, frayed edges, burn marks
or any other damage. Replace damaged belts.

Replacing the Mower Belt

Squealing when the belt is rotating, blades slipping
when cutting grass, frayed belt edges, burn marks
and cracks are signs of a worn mower belt. Replace
the mower belt if any of these conditions are
evident.

1. Disengage the PTO, move the motion control

levers to the neutral locked position and set
the parking brake.

2. Stop the engine, remove the key, and wait for

all moving parts to stop before leaving the
operating position.

3. Remove the screws and belt covers (Figure 54).

4. Remove the two drive belts from the two upper

pulleys. Refer to Replacing the Drive Belts.

5. Pull on the spring loaded idler arm to loosen

the belt tension.

6. Remove the mower belt from the mower

pulleys and the bottom pulley of the three
stacked pulleys (Figure 54 and Figure 55).

7. Install the new belt around the mower pulleys

and the bottom pulley of the three stacked
pulleys (Figure 54 and Figure 55).

8. Pull on the spring loaded idler arm to loosen

the belt tension and align the mower belt onto
the idler pulley (Figure 55).

9. Install the two drive belts onto the two upper

pulleys. Refer to Replacing the Drive Belts.

10. Install the belt covers with the tabs in the

slots. Install the screws and close the latches
(Figure 54).

11. Check the tension on the drive belts. Refer to

Adjusting the Drive Belts.
