Steeply Sloped Fields
If performing a perimeter survey in a field with more than 3’ of
fall from one end to the other, you may “run-out” of travel on
the TM-1 mast. In this case, dial in slope to the laser transmitter
to closely match the existing field before performing the
perimeter survey. Then add or subtract the calculated slope
from the slope initially set into the laser.
1. To determine the fields approximate slope, take a single
elevation reading on each axis at 100’, or a known distance
from the transmitter (Figure 4-8).
Figure 4-8. Measure Elevation on Opposite Sides of Field
2. Calculate the slope as for a complete perimeter survey (see
“Calculating the Slopes” on page 4-8).
fall north to south
% approximate slope north to south
3. Dial the approximate slope into the transmitter, then
complete the perimeter survey as usual.
• If the calculated slope goes in the same direction as the
approximate slope set in the transmitter, add the two
values to get the true slope of the field:
calculated perimeter survey = .05% slope north to south
.35% N–S slope in laser + .05% N–S slope = .40% N–S slope
