b) Connected devices
Also observe the safety and operating instructions of any other devices which are
connected to the product.
c) Hole saw operation
• Safety goggles or full-face shields MUST BE WORN by all operators to comply
with ANSI Z87.1 “OCCUPATIONAL EYE AND FACE PROTECTIONS”.
• When drilling in material that causes dust, a dust mask should be worn.
• Observe all speed restrictions indicated on the saws, containers, labels, or as
printed on the reverse. The maximum safe free speed (MSFS or MAX MFS)
should not be exceeded under any circumstances. MSFS or MAX MFS means
the maximum free speed (RPM) spinning free with no work applied. The efficient
cutting speed is less than the MSFS.
• Use gloves while mounting, disassembling and operating hole saws. Keep hands
in sight and clear of all moving parts. Do not put hands or fingers around, on or
below any rotating cutting tools.
• Observe and comply with all requirements outlined in the American National
Standards Institute’s ANSI/ASME B 94.54-1984 “SPECIFICATION FOR HOLE
SAWS, HOLE SAW ARBORS, AND HOLE SAW ACCESSORIES”.
Operation
• Select the proper pilot drill, arbor and saw. Use the correct arbor for the saw you plan to
operate.
• When using positive drive quick interchange arbors, retract the pins and screw the arbor
into the saw as far as possible. Adjust the drive pins into the saw by backing off the saw
just enough to align the drive pin hole with the pins. Then drop the pins for engagement.
• Ensure that the drive pins are fully engaged at all times, re-checking frequently.
• Ensure that the arbor shank is properly inserted in the chuck and tighten the chuck with
a chuck key.
• Do not install or disassemble the saw and arbor by inserting a screwdriver or similar tool in
the knock-out slots. Doing so may cause the saw to shatter or distort.
• Be sure to frequently remove chips and slugs from the drilling area to avoid heat build-up
or the stripping of teeth. Intermittently withdrawing the drill will help remove chips and slugs
and should be done on all materials except thin sheet material. This is especially necessary
when using the saw in a vertical position, such as in a drill press.
• Follow the recommended operating speeds outlined below. A speed that is too fast or slow
will dull the hole saw or burr the workpiece and shorten the life of the hole saw.
• Use the hole saw at the correct angle so that it is perpendicular to the workpiece. Tilting or
bouncing the hole saw when cutting will overload the teeth and cause tooth stripping. This
practice also produces a rough, non-round hole.
