1   General Information

The LED4Dxxx light source efficiently combines  the  output  of  four  LEDs  with  different  center-
wavelength into a single collimated beam. The LED4Dxxx is user configurable and available for
a large variety of 

wavelength combinations

. This makes the LED4Dxxx applicable for wide field

fluorescence  microscopy  when  combined  with  suitable  excitation  and  emission  filters.  There
are 224 models with preselected wavelengths available. Please visit the

configure your LED-combination. 

The  LED  current  can  be  adjusted  to  quickly  set  the  intensity  via  a  connected 

DC4100

  or

DC4104

 4-Channel LED Driver (sold  separately).  For  this,  the LED4Dxxx module  has  a  flying

lead  terminated  in  a  14  pin  M16  plug  compatible  with  the  Thorlabs  DC4100  or  DC4104  Four
Channel  LED  drivers.  The  user  can  control  the  source  either  on  the  front  panel  of  the  Four-
Channel  LED  driver,  or  with  an  external  trigger  connection  through  the  USB-connection.  This
makes the LED4Dxxx a versatile light source with LED switching and accurate intensity modula-
tion of each individual LED. 

The  microscope  adapters  for  Leica,  Nikon,  Olympus  and  Zeiss  microscopes  make  the
LED4Dxxx  an  ideal  choice  for  microscopy  applications  where  multiple  wavelengths  are  re-
quired.  Additionally,  an  adapter  can  be  mounted  to  couple  the  exiting  light  into  a  Liquid  Light
Guide.

The source is vibration free, easy to operate, and has a long lifetime.

1.1   Safety

 Attention 

The safety of any system incorporating the equipment is the responsibility of the assembler of
the system. 

All  statements  regarding  safety  of  operation  and  technical  data  in  this  instruction  manual  will
only apply when the unit is operated correctly as it was designed for.  

The Four Wavelength High Power LED Source LED4Dxxx series must not be operated in ex-
plosion endangered environments! 

Do not obstruct the air ventilation slots in the housing!

 Caution 

During normal operation, the case temperature of Thorlabs Four Wavelength High Power LED
Source LED4Dxxx will rise by up to 25°C (45°F) above ambient temperature.

Take care for an unabstracted heat dissipation. Do not cover the enclosure and provide a free
air ventilation to the radiator.

Do not remove covers! 

Do not open the cabinet. There are no parts serviceable by the operator inside!

This precision device is only serviceable if properly packed into the complete original packaging
including the plastic foam sleeves. If necessary, ask for replacement packaging.

Refer servicing to qualified personnel!

Only with written consent from Thorlabs may changes to single components be made or com-
ponents not supplied by Thorlabs be used. 

The Four Wavelength High Power LED Source LED4Dxxx series must only be connected with
duly shielded connection cables.
