1.1 API Source

The atmospheric pressure ionization (API) source forms gas phase sample 
ions from sample molecules that are contained in solution. The API source 
also serves as the sample interface between the LC and the MS detector. You 
can operate the API source using the electrospray ionization (ESI), 
atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI), or nanospray ionization 
(NSI) technique.

The API source consists of:

•

API probe related components (ESI, APCI, or NSI)

•

API stack

API Probe Related Components

The API probe related components are external to the vacuum manifold. You 
need to switch probe related components to switch between ionization 
techniques. You can do this without venting the LCQ Deca XP Plus.

The three types of API probe related components are:

•

ESI probe assembly

•

APCI probe assembly

•

NSI source assembly

ESI Probe Assembly

The ESI probe assembly consists of the ESI flange, the ESI slide assembly, 
and the ESI probe. See Figure 1-1, Figure 1-2, and Figure 1-3. 

The ESI flange holds the ESI slide assembly. The ESI slide assembly holds 
the ESI probe in position near the entrance to the ion transfer capillary. The 
ESI flange also seals the atmospheric pressure region of the API source; and, 
when it is in the operating position against the spray shield, compresses the 
high-voltage safety-interlock switch. The ESI flange mounts on rails that 
allow movement of the flange into and out of the atmospheric pressure region 
of the API source for easy servicing. Two flange retainer bolts hold the flange 
in place against the spray shield of the API stack. A grounded fitting holder 
secures a fitting that connects the sample transfer line to the ESI sample tube.
