Glossary

APH

Active Picture Height.

Black Burst

A composite video signal consisting of all horizontal and vertical synchro-
nization information and burst. Typically used as the house reference
synchronization signal in television facilities. Also called “color black.”

Burst

A small reference packet of the subcarrier sine wave sent on every line of
composite video. Since the carrier is suppressed, this phase and frequency
reference is required for synchronous demodulation of the color difference
signals in the receiver.

B-Y

One of the color difference signals used in the NTSC and PAL systems,
obtained by subtracting luminance (Y) from the blue camera signal (B).

Chrominance

The color information in a television picture. Chrominance can be further
broken down into two properties of color: hue and saturation.

Chrominance Signal

The high-frequency portion of the video signal, obtained by quadrature
amplitude modulation of a 4.43 MHz (PAL) or 3.58 MHz (NTSC) subcarrier
with R-Y and B-Y information.

Composite Video

A single video signal containing all of the necessary information to
reproduce a color picture. Created by adding quadrature amplitude modu-
lated U and V to the luminance signal.

Frame

Contains all the information required for a complete picture. For interlaced
scan systems, there are two fields in a frame.

GBR

Green, Blue and Red. The three primary colors used in color television’s

additive color reproduction system. These are the three color components
generated by the camera and used by the picture monitor to produce a
picture.

Icon

A graphic symbol that represents a selection on a display screen.
