M-PESA is a money transfer service that allows you to send and receive money from your
phone, top-up airtime, make bill payments and buy goods. Visit an authorised retailer with
your identification document to register for the service. Once registered you will receive
an SMS to activate your account and create your personal identification number (PIN).
Keep your PIN to yourself and do not share it with anyone.
When your account is live you will have access to a range of services. You can put money
into your account by depositing cash at an authorised retailer in exchange for electronic
money which you can send to your family and friends anywhere in your country. You can
also withdraw cash from your account at retail outlets. Every transaction is secured by
your PIN and is confirmed by SMS.
M-PESA is only available from Vodafone and may not be provided in all countries.
