AUTO-ADJUST BRAKE MECHANISM
THEORY OF OPERATION
The auto-adjust mechanism is located on the bottom of the brake assembly. As the brake pad material wears down,
the distance the brake shoes travel to engage the brake drum becomes longer. When the travel becomes long
enough, the brake lever engages the auto-adjust lever and causes it to index a tooth on the star wheel adjuster.
This rotates the adjuster, which decreases the travel needed for the brake shoes to engage the brake drum.
Note: There are no manual adjustments for the brake shoes.
Note: The symptom of a low brake pedal may indicate that the auto adjuster is not working or the brake linkage
is not adjusted properly. Remove the vehicle from service and repair the brakes.
Taylor-Dunn does not currently supply asbestos fiber-brake pads/shoes
with any vehicle. However, there is the possibility that the original brake
pads/shoes were replaced with aftermarket pads/shoes containing
asbestos. Since this possibility does exist, the brake pads/shoes should be
handled as if they do contain asbestos.
Never use compressed air or dry brush to clean the brake assemblies. Use an
OSHA approved vacuum cleaner or any alternate method approved by OSHA
to minimize the hazard caused by airborne asbestos fibers and brake dust.
Do not grind, sand, break, or chisel the brake pads/shoes, as this will cause
unnecessary dust, possibly releasing asbestos fibers in the air.
Always wear protective clothing and a respirator when working on the
brake pads/shoes or their associated components.
Inhaled asbestos fibers have been found to cause cancer and respiratory
diseases.
Do not drive the vehicle if any worn or broken part is detected in any part of
the brake system. The cause of the damage must be repaired immediately.
