from nectar source to nectar source. Ideally, the
feeder should also be near flowers, in an area
that has both sun and partial shade during the
day.
Place the feeder at least 15 to 20 feet (4.5 m to 6
m) away from windows, as they are a hazard to
hummingbirds. Hang the feeder approximately
5 ft above the ground to discourage unwelcome
pests like ants, mice + squirrels from feeding on
the nectar. Hanging the feeder near trees, shrubs,
or other cover offers a convenient location for
birds to seek refuge from predators and severe
weather as well.
Maintenance
Cleaning and refilling the feeder often is essential
in preventing deadly mold from growing.
Therefore, it’s recommended to clean and refill
the feeder twice a week in hot weather (above
60ºF / 15ºC), and once a week in cooler weather
(under 60ºF / 15ºC).
1. Unscrew the glass jar from the moat and base
of the feeder to dispose of the old nectar and
moat water.
2. Remove the base and feeding ports from the
circular perch (Fig. 6).
3. Use hot tap water, or a weak vinegar solution
to clean the feeder. Avoid using dish soaps,
as they can leave harmful residue in the
feeder. Using a brush, scrub all parts of the
feeder individually before rinsing thoroughly
and drying.
4. Once dry, attach the feeding ports back to the
perch, then reassemble, refill, and re-hang the
feeder as instructed before. Wash your hands
after handling the hummingbird feeder.
