4.8.
Brakes
The truck is provided with four braking systems:
Service brake (
Parking brake (
Engine brake (
Retarder (
).
4.8.1.
Service brake
The service brake is operated by the brake pedal and works pneumatically:
-
When the service brake is operated, the brake lights will light up;
-
When a trailer is attached, also the trailer brake lights will light up.
The current air pressure is shown on the
main screen (§ 3.9.2.1. Main screen: General
.
When the air pressure drops below 5.5 bar, the
buzzer
and
error message light
on the control panel
become active:
-
Stop the vehicle immediately!
If the air pressure drops further, at some point the parking brake will become active:
-
The indicator
status braking system
on the control panel becomes active.
4.8.1.1.
Anti blocking system
The service brake is equipped with an anti blocking system (ABS).
This
anti blocking system
creates an outstanding brake stability and manoeuvrability at a critical
braking situation. For instance, when the service brake is operated too powerful on a slippery road.
By preventing the wheels from blocking, the steering characteristics of the vehicle remain intact.
CAUTION!
The
anti blocking system
does not release the driver from his obligation to adapt
his driving style to the traffic conditions and the state of the road.
The anti blocking system cannot prevent the consequences of a distance which is
too small to the vehicle in front, or at a cornering speed which is too high.
CAUTION!
Customize the driving and braking behaviour NOT on the
anti blocking system
.
Do not brake later and then harder. This comes at the expense of the brakes and
brings other road users in danger.
The braking distance will sometimes (but not always) be shorter by intervention of
the anti blocking system.
