Tape Carousel Upgrade Guide for Spectra Logic Libraries
Prepare the New Carousel
This procedure is only necessary if more than one drive is installed in your library.
If only one drive is in the library, skip to page 12.
Background information.
Three tape slots on every carousel have a dual purpose; they can be either storage slots for tapes or pass
through slots to access drives. The absence or presence of backstops determines whether a carousel slot is a
pass through slot or a storage slot. These combination locations are marked on the top of the carousel with
both the tape slot number and the drive number.
The new carousel comes with tape backstops installed in drive positions 2, 3, and 4 making these locations
tape storage slots. You need to remove the backstop(s) from each carousel position where a drive is located.
.
Remove tape backstops from the Spectra 9000 and Spectra 10000 carousels.
If you are installing the carousel in a Spectra 4000 or Spectra 5000 library, skip to page 11.
The backstops on the 8mm carousel are fastened to the upper carousel ring with two phillips screws, see
Figure 8. Use the #1 phillips screwdriver to remove two screws that fasten the backstop to the carousel. Do
this for each position on the carousel that needs to be a pass through slot for drive access. The two black
arrows in Figure 8 point to the two screws that hold a backstop in place.
