End Gears
Grease Type ............................................... NLGI#2
Frequency ................ Annually or When Changing
The end gears, shown in Figure 110, should
always have a thin coat of heavy grease to
minimize corrosion, noise, and wear. Wipe away
excess grease that could be thrown onto the
V-belts and reduce optimal power transmission
from the motor.

Handling & Care
Make sure to clean and lubricate any gears
you install or change. Be very careful during
handling and storage—the grease coating on the
gears will easily pickup dirt or debris, which can
then spread to the other gears and increase the
rate of wear.
Make sure the end gear cover remains installed
whenever possible to keep the gears free of dust
or debris from the outside environment.
Lubricating
1.
DISCONNECT LATHE FROM POWER!
2.
Remove the end gear cover and all the end
gears shown in Figure 110.
3.
Clean the end gears thoroughly with mineral
spirits to remove the old grease. Use a small
brush if necessary to clean between the
teeth.
4.
Clean the shafts, and wipe away any grease
splatters in the vicinity and on the inside of
the end gear cover.
5.
Using a clean brush, apply a thin layer of
grease on the gears. Make sure to get grease
between the gear teeth, but do not fill the
teeth valleys.
6.
Install the end gears and mesh them
together with an approximate 0.002"
backlash. Once the gears are meshed
together, apply a small dab of grease
between them where they mesh together—
this grease will be distributed when the
gears rotate and re-coat any areas scraped
off during installation.
7.
Re-install the end gear cover before re-
connecting the lathe to power.
