3 NAVIGATION DEFINITIONS - What do the words mean?
In this manual and in the Multi-Navigator
TM
you will find some words that are used quite frequently. Knowing the
meaning of them will make your navigation more fun and the use of the Multi-Navigator
TM
even easier.
GPS -
Global Positioning System which, thanks to more than 24 satellites around Earth, can provide us with signals
which are used by the GPS receiver in the Multi-Navigator
TM
to calculate an accurate position. It is good to know
that the GPS satellites circles around Earth at an elevation of approximately 20 000 km. The GPS receiver in the
Multi-Navigator
TM
needs to receive signals from at least 4 satellites in order to calculate its position. Since the
satellite signals are quite weak it is good to know that it is always to prefer to use the Multi-NavigatorTM in quite
open areas in order to get it to navigate quickly.
WAYPOINT -
a position stored in the Multi-Navigator
TM
memory, which can be used as a target to navigate. A
waypoint is stored complete with latitude, longitude, altitude (from the air-pressure controlled altimeter sensor),
time and date. It is also stored as an 8 character name.
ROUTE -
A number of waypoints connected together in a route.
ACQUISITION -
When the GPS receiver collects satellite data, but has not yet calculated a position. SEARCH - The
GPS receiver shows the number of satellites it has contact with.
TRACKING -
When the GPS receiver collects satellite data and has calculated a position.
XTE (Cross Track Error) -
The distance (or ”side-error”) you have deviated from the straight line of travel by, when
navigating to a waypoint.
TTG (Time To Go) -
The calculated time it will take you to reach the waypoint you are now navigating towards.
BEARING -
The direction towards a selected waypoint from your current position.
COURSE -
The direction you are travelling in. UTC - Universal Time Coordinated. This is the time which the GPS
system is using and it is normally the same as GMT (Greenwich Meridian Time) except from daylight saving time
adjustment during the summer.
