1: Introduction and Overview
System Backplane and Drives
As a system, the Altix XE340 server supports the use of four hard disk drives. The disk-drive
backplane works as a single backplane divided into two sections. This means that while a single
power connector is used and functions such as overheating apply to both sections together, each
pair of hard drives is logically connected to its own serverboard. Consequently, RAID setup is
limited to a two-drive scheme, (RAID cannot be spread across all four drives).

Note:
The disk drives are hot-pluggable; however, the standard (non-RAID) hardware/software
does not seamlessly support hot-plugging. If you add a disk to a non-RAID system, you need to
reboot the system to see it. If you remove a disk from a non-RAID system and do not replace it,
then system I/O time-outs will occur when you attempt to access it.
