The Basics

Important Anatomical Structures of the Heart

Four chambers:
• Right atrium – receives the deoxygenated blood 

back from the body circulation through the superior
and inferior vena cava, and pumps it into the right
ventricle

• Right ventricle – receives the deoxygenated blood

from the right atrium, and pumps it into the pulmo-
nary circulation through the pulmonary arteries

• Left atrium – receives the oxygenated blood back

from the pulmonary circulation through the pulmo-
nary veins, and pumps it into the left ventricle

• Left ventricle – receives the oxygenated blood from

the left atrium, and pumps it into the body circulation
through the aorta.
