CONNECTION  AND  OPERATION

See  fig u re  on  previous  page.

1.  C o n n e c t  th e   C64  t o   its   m on ito r  and  p erip h e ra ls   (d is k e tte   drive)  as 

in s tr u c te d   by  C om m odore.

2.  Switch  o ff  pow er  to   th e   C64,  if  it  is  n o t  off  a lre a d y .

3.  C arefu lly   plug  th e   242,  f a c e   up,  in to   th e   c a r t r i d g e   slot  of  t h e   C64.

C heck  t h a t   th e   c o n n e c to r   is  aligned  squarely  and  fully  s e a te d . 
The  C64  and  242  m ust  r e s t  on  a  f l a t   s u r f a c e .

4.  C o n n e c t  th e   MIDI  cab les.

Use  SCI's  Model  838  or  o th e r  MIDI  cab le.  Two  of  th e se   a re 

req u ire d   for  m ost  a p p licatio n s.  C o n n e c t  one  from   MIDI  IN  of 
th e   242  to   MIDI  OUT  of  your  s y n th e s iz e r  or  o th e r  musical 

in s tr u m e n t.  C o n n e c t  th e   o th e r   c a b le   from   MIDI  OUT  of  th e   242 

to   MIDI  IN  of  t h e   synth.

5.  C o n n e c t  th e   fo o ts w itc h ,  if  d esired .

The  f o o ts w itc h   may  be  used  to   s t a r t   and  stop  seq u ences,  and 
p erfo rm   o th e r   functions  called   for  by  th e   s o f tw a r e .  (Use  SCI's 
Model  839.)

6.  C o n n e c t  th e   e x t e r n a l  clock,  if  d esired.

The  clock  input  ta k e s   a 

'A"

  mono  phone  plug.  Use  it  for 

synchronizing  th e   C64  w ith   a n o th e r  seq u e n c e r,  drum  m achine, 
or  clo ck  signal  re c o rd e d   on  ta p e .

Suppose,  fo r  ex a m p le ,  t h a t   a  drum  m achine  lays  down  a  b asic 

rh y th m   on  tr a c k   one  of  a  m u l ti- t r a c k   ta p e   r e c o r d e r .  If  th e   clock 
o u tp u t  of  th e   drum box  is  re c o rd e d   on  t r a c k   tw o   a t  th e   s am e 
tim e ,  th e   o u tp u t  of  tr a c k   tw o  can   th e n   synchronize  th e   242 

during  many  succesive  overdubbing  ta k e s .

7.  Switch  on  th e   sy stem .

Follow  th e   o rd er  r e c o m m e n d e d   by  C om m o d o re,  with  the 

s y n th e s iz e r  la st.

8.  Insert  th e   d is k e tte   of  SCI  900  series  s o ftw a re

Load  and  run  th e   s o f tw a r e   accord in g  to   th e   in s tru c tio n s   in  its 
o p e ra tio n   m anual.

9.  If  you  do  not  have  th e   s o f tw a r e   d is k e t te ,  t h e   PROGRAMMING 
se c tio n   gives  a  simple  BASIC  pro g ram   you  can  use  to  t e s t   your 

h a rd w a re   (see  page  12).
