This term cannot be dissociated from acupuncture, in the Chinese
ideogram.
The recent discovery of very old manuscripts in a Chinese tomb ( Ma-
Wang-Dui ) leads one to think that moxibustion may be older than and at
the origin of the definition of meridians and acupuncture!
Heat stimulation using non-burning combustion of the artemisia has been
used for millennia, in China, of course, and in Japan.
It is currently being scientifically researched to demonstrate the variety
and types of physiological mechanisms involved. For example, works
show that stimulating specific points – SP-6 / BL-67 / KI-1 bilaterally-
encourages cephalic repositioning of the fetus during the weeks preceding
birth.
Ancient texts recommend broad use of moxibustion, with acupuncture
( illnesses that are not cured using needles will be with moxas… ). They
present this technique as being simpler and less impressive than needles,
as well as longer in application, even if the results of treatment often
come faster and last longer…
The energy applied is obviously indicated in all states of void (Blood,
Energy) achieved using adverse energies, Wind, Cold and Damp, as well as
in the reduction of excess, in the case of Damp Heat, for example.
All deficiency syndromes are associated with a lowering of the defense
system. It is therefore always a good idea to reinforce the immune
system, both in prevention and treatment.
Applying external energy is often more efficient than mobilizing the
patient’s own energy, especially if he has diminished or deficient
capability.
