The R RD DS S system has been adopted in
many European countries and it is
intended to become a global network.
Apart from the normal FM radio signal this
system transmits an inaudible flow of dig-
italised data which sends out encoded
information to the RDS receptor and
which is used to control the following
functions among others:

By means of the PI code, the radio tuner
recognises the station being received in
that moment, e.g.: RNE 1.

The PS code transmits the station name
that is shown on display.

Due to such a limited range of the modu-
lated frequency stations, several stations
with different frequencies broadcast the
same program from the one channel. The
AF code sends out information to the
radio tuner on all the available frequen-
cies for that particular channel. This
allows the radio tuner to select the best
reception quality frequency.
"AF" shows on display as a confirmation
that you have alternative frequency tun-
ing available.
The switching from one frequency to
another is hardly perceptible. The channel
name will still show on display.

This informs the listener that the channel
you are hearing can send out traffic bul-
letins.
