Hearing Aid Compatibility with Mobile Phones
When some m obile phones ar e used near s ome hear ing devices (hearing aids and
cochlear implants), users may detect a buz zing, humming, or whining noise. Some hearing
devices are more immune than others to this interference noise, and phones also vary in the
amount of interference they generate.
The wireless telephone industry has developed ratings for some of their mobile phones, to
assist hearing device users in finding phones that may be compatible with their hearing
devices. Not all phones have been r ated. Phones that are rated have the r ating on thei r
box or a label on the box.
The ratings a re not gua rantees. Results w ill v ary dependi ng on the us er’s hear ing dev ice
and hearing loss. If your hearing device happens to be v ulnerable to interfer-ence, you may
not be able to use a rated phone successfully. Trying out the phone with your hearing device
is the best way to evaluate it for your personal needs.
M-Ratings: Phones r ated M 3 or M 4 m eet FC C r equirements and ar e l ikely to g ener-ate
less interference to hearing devices than phones that are not labeled. M4 is the better/higher
of the two ratings.
T-Ratings: Phones rated T3 or T4 meet FCC requirements and are likely to be more usable
with a hearing device’s telecoil (“T Switch” or “Telephone Switch”) than unrated phones. T4
is the better /higher of the tw o ratings. (Note that not al l hearing devices have telecoils in
them.)
Hearing dev ices m ay al so be m easured for immunity to thi s ty pe of i nterference. Y our
hearing device manufacturer or hearing health professional may help you find results for
your hear ing dev ice. The m ore i mmune your hearing ai d i s, the l ess l ikely y ou ar e t o
experience interference noise from mobile phones.
This phone has been te sted and r ated for u se with hear ing ai ds for some of the wireless
technologies that it uses. However, there may be some newer wireless technologies used in
this phone that hav e not been tes ted yet for use with hearing aids. It i s important to try the
different features of this phone thor oughly and i n different locations, using your hearing aid
or c ochlear i mplant, to deter mine i f y ou hear any i nterfering noi se. C onsult y our s ervice
